Almost Didn’t Take the Chance: Why They Applied Anyway 

Real stories from those who almost didn’t go to Alliance 2026 and what changed when they did

Across every conversation I had at Alliance 2026, one thing stood out. Almost everyone had a reason not to attend. 
 
For some, it was budget. For others, it was stepping into a new role or not knowing what they would gain from the experience. For global attendees, it was the added challenge of travel. And for many, it was uncertainty around whether they should even apply. 
 
And still, they showed up. 

It Is Not Always Easy to Say Yes 

Attending Alliance often requires more than interest. It takes planning, justification, and sometimes a bit of luck. 
 
Jennifer Christensen from San Diego State University shared that without the opportunity she received, she would not have been able to attend. That opportunity also allowed someone else from her team to come, extending the impact beyond just one person. 
 
That reality is familiar across institutions. Resources are limited, and opportunities like this are not guaranteed. 

But Showing Up Changes What Is Possible 

For Morgan Andres from Duke University, attending came at a moment of transition as she stepped into new responsibilities. She approached the experience with a different mindset, focused on improving processes and bringing back ideas she could apply immediately. 
 
That is where the value shifts. You are not just attending. You are looking for solutions. 

You Do Not Need to Have It All Figured Out 

A common hesitation is not knowing what you would contribute or whether your experience is enough. 
 
But value does not come from having all the answers. It comes from being willing to share what you are working through and learn from others doing the same. 
 
As Moby Onuoha from McMaster University shared, many institutions are facing similar challenges. The opportunity is in learning how others are navigating them and applying those insights back home. 

The Impact Goes Beyond the Event 

What makes this experience meaningful is what happens after. 
 
Every person I spoke with talked about bringing something back. Whether it is a new approach, a connection, or a different perspective, the impact extends well beyond the conference. 
 
One person attending can influence an entire team.
