Where do you work? How long have you been there?
I work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Office of Student Financial Aid. I joined the Systems team back in December 2014, where I now lead an awesome group of business analysts, developers, and data pros. Before that, I was at City Colleges of Chicago, where I worked on both the Financial Aid and Student Financials sides of things.
My background is in Accounting and Marketing, and I started my career at an audit firm, where City Colleges happened to be one of my clients. After working with them, I decided to take the leap into higher education, and its been anything but dull ever since!
Are you working on-site, remotely, or hybrid? What has that experience been like for you?
Since COVID flipped the work world upside down, I’ve become a remote work convert—and I’m not looking back! While I do venture into the office for occasional in-person meeting or when duty calls, the days of commuting five days a week are a distant memory that I don’t miss.
Working from home has been an absolute game-changer for me, especially as a parent to three very active kids—ages 13, 11, and 8—who are all about sports, and especially hockey. Being home allows me the flexibility to be home when they get home from school and not stress about rushing home to chauffer them to their evening activities.
Surprisingly, my productivity has gone through the roof. The hours I used to spend commuting are now spent getting things done. Tools like Microsoft Teams have become my virtual office besties, keeping collaboration smooth with features like meeting recordings, note-taking, and screen sharing. Remote work has redefined my work-life harmony!
What Student or ERP system do you work in, and what modules do you primarily work with?
I work in Campus Solutions, focusing primarily on the Financial Aid and Campus Community modules. I also help support some 3rd party systems, such as: Anthology (verification) and Blackbaud (scholarship management system).
When did you get involved with HEUG? How did that happen?
I first became involved with HEUG during my time at City Colleges of Chicago. Initially, I was more of a passive participant—I spent time viewing and learning from the discussions but never posted or imagined presenting. That changed when I joined the team at UW-Madison. My predecessor, Mary Hillstrom, was actively involved in the HEUG community, and I felt inspired to follow in her footsteps, knowing I had some big shoes to fill. I began contributing by responding to posts and eventually stepped into presenting, despite my very deep fear of public speaking.
As my engagement grew, I wanted to take on an even bigger role. That opportunity came when Steve Hahn, a former President of HEUG, nominated me for the Product Advisory Group. At the time, I had no idea what I was stepping into, but it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience—and I’m so glad I took the leap!
In what capacities have you been involved with HEUG?
I am an active member of the Financial Aid Community and regularly participate in both regional and national conferences. Currently, I am serving my second three-year term on the Campus Student Financial Support (CSFS) Product Advisory Group, where I’ve held various roles, including Vice Chair, Communications lead, e-Academy coordinator, and Resource Center coordinator.
Do you have a favorite or meaningful story regarding your time in HEUG?
I remember one of the first FA Coffee Hours we hosted as the FA Advisory Group. I was amazed by how many people joined, how lively the conversation was and all the information being shared. With each session, participation continued to grow, and the outpouring of gratitude we received for hosting these during FAFSA Simplification was overwhelming. It’s truly incredible to see how much these sessions have helped and supported the community and how much they helped me!
What has been your favorite conference location? Why?
My favorite conference location so far has been San Antonio, Texas. The venue was excellent, the weather was perfect, and the food was incredible—it was also great to explore some great local breweries with some colleagues that I have met over the years.
Looking forward to New Orleans!
What is your first HEUG related memory?
Things are starting to feel like a blur, but I vividly remember my first Alliance Conference. I was one of the only attendees from my school, and it was completely overwhelming. Despite that, the people there were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and more than willing to share their insights.
What is YOUR value proposition for HEUG?
My involvement in HEUG has been incredibly valuable, providing a great opportunity to both learn and contribute. Through HEUG and my work on the PAG, I have been able to share my knowledge and expertise while also learning from others who face similar challenges – especially during FAFSA Simplification, where “misery loves company” truly resonates. The financial aid community, in particular, is filled with knowledgeable and dedicated individuals who are always open to collaboration and eager to help their colleagues. The connections I’ve made have played a key role in my professional growth. For me, the time I invest in HEUG is well worth it—it helps me solve problems more effectively, brings fresh perspectives to my work, and, sometimes, it’s just nice to know others share the same struggles! It’s a space where continuous learning, innovation, and meaningful networking truly come together.
The HEUG isn’t just about technology—it is about connecting with people who genuinely want to lift each other up. Over the years, those connections have grown into collaborations, friendships, and countless learning opportunities. It’s a constant reminder of why this community is so special.
Do you have a work-related philosophy you would like to share?
My work philosophy is rooted in the belief that leadership is about serving and empowering those around me. I aim to create an environment where trust, collaboration, and growth are at the core. I believe in rolling up my sleeves and working closely with my team, taking the time to understand the challenges they face and providing the support and encouragement they need to grow and succeed.
